12/9/01: The Taliban had been routed, Bin Laden is being chased. Next steps? Thoughtfully examine why these terrorists exist and how we may have inadvertently fueled their hatred? Or, think of them as aberrant "evil-doers" who simply hate us because they are jealous or crazy, continuing the "war" and stepping it up, moving on to new countries and targets? How have we changed since the '60s when we all read "The Ugly American"? Is our leadership as insightful as we would hope? "We refer to the Taliban as 'evil-doers': they call us the 'Great Satan'. Each side thus seeks to destroy the other in the name of God."- click for article

Sometimes it takes courage to peak out at this world. Friday I met with a new client, a nice looking young man with paranoid schizophrenia. He asked me what his different meds were for, one I told him was for depression, the other I thought was for high blood pressure, and the third for schizophrenia. "So that's what I got" he said, although he really didn't sound surprised. "Schizophrenia goes away after a while, right?", he asked me. No, I told him, it is like diabetes, you have to take medicince for it the rest of your life. He waited a bit and asked me the same thing again, and I looked at his chart, saw he was 23 and said, you are young, just a kid (he looked at the gray in my hair and took the comment well) and I looked at him square in the eyes and said, no, I won't lie to you, it will not go away, it is a disease just like other diseases and what you can do is take your medications for the rest of your life and it can help to keep your disease under control- that it the good news. He heard what I said and looked chagrined, so I smiled at him and said, I know it's the same thing you've heard a million times before- but it's the truth. He told me how he was going to finish his high school diploma, go to technical school, get a band together and play his drums. I encouraged him to play his music, and to myself I wished I hadn't met him a hundred times before, wished I didn't know slim his chances for happiness are.

12/16/01: Last weekend Carol woke up to find her left arm and leg paralyzed: her MS had come back in full force. She had to fight to get her needed treatments because her doctor was out of town and the doctor she dealt with was unfamiliar with her disease and not interested in enlightening himself. So, she had a few harrowing days, but by Thursday had gotten all three treatments and was experiencing some return of function- a very good sign. She hopes to return to work this next week, too early but not early enough for Carol, denying this horrible illness its control over her life. And so we keep on driving forward in this life, into our selves.

12/22/01: Today Carrie and I went to Seattle and saw a french movie "Amelie", (picture of actress at right). It was quite good, intellectually stimulating and amusing. We both liked it, so it is 2 thumbs up... Check it out.

Carol returned to work last week (she is taking the bus because she is not safe to drive); she only wobbles a little now and then when she walks and she moves her left arm real good and can grip some with her hand. Hopefully this MS crap will not return anytime soon- Carol has things to do.
Some days we feel like we are carrying a burden the size of a huge boulder, other days we feel like we are almost ethereal. Are the days different, or are we? This life is complex in its simplicity. We all live under the same sky- we all will live, we all will die- the circle only has one side. (heard that in a song on the radio) "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science." Albert Einstein |
