Marty turned me on to Annie Gallup's music last Spring, saw her perform at The Grateful Bread in Seattle, bought her latest CD- Swerve. Craig had the CD to listen to for a couple of months and then I got it back from him in August and just now sat and listened to it once again. Her songs have interesting lyrics, I love the way she uses inflection in her performance. Annie is from Ann Arbor, she is from the family that Gallup Park there is named after. I highly recommend seeing her live, recommend the CD. Click on her picture for link to a site with some info on her... "When you told me, honey, you'd love me forever, was your money on the end of the world?" -Annie Gallup, Swerve
Washington is a beautiful state, with mountains, forests, volcanoes, whales, salmon, islands, hot springs, the ocean, and more. Some people here say this is God's country; some have said that all of the trees here focus some sort of energy of the universe. Life is full of ironic juxtapositions, Washington is no exception. Besides being an area of great natural beauty and peace, it is also "home to the Navy's entire fleet of eight Trident nuclear submarines... whose only function is to launch long-range nuclear missiles... Luckily they have done nothing to contribute" to our current war.... Life is ironic, in a very scarey sort of way. The quotes are from Sunday Seattle Times Front Page story- click on either picture at the side and it will take you to their article... OOPS!! Article is no longer there...

About 10 years ago I went to a second hand, junk shop near here, one with multiple buildings filled with all sorts of used oddities, with stuff strewn out on the ground between all the buildings. I found a heavy-duty stationary bike in very good shape and lugged it up to the main building to pay for it, then grabbed it and lugged it out to my car. I was struggling to get it into my trunk when I sensed someone come up behind me, to my left, and then a man's voice said "farmer", which didn't register, and I turned to see a large man and said "huh?", and he repeated "you're a farm girl". I was puzzled, turned back to trying to get the bike into my trunk and as the man was helping it dawned on me what he was saying, that he was commenting on the fact that I hadn't even considered asking for help with this physical task, that I lugged the bike out like it was a bale of hay and I was going to throw it down to the cows. I turned back to him and told him that he was right, I had grown up in the country with black angus cows, a horse, chickens for a while, a boar for a while, and always cats and a dog. He was pleased with himself, pleased at his demonstration of significant powers of human observation. Ever since then, I catch myself once in a while doing something that might elicit "farmer" again.
On my October Page I wrote something about seeing Bob Dylan in concert, performing his newest album "Love and Theft", since then it has gone gold and has been nominated for 3 Grammy's. Dylan's song lyrics have finally been released- click on album cover to left for site. A wonderful album... Some "Love And Theft" lyrics:"Romeo, he said to Juliette, 'You got a poor complexion. It doesn't give your appearance a very youthful touch!' Juliette said back to Romeo, 'Why don't you just shove off If it bothers you so much.' " - Floater (Too Much to Ask) "Well I came ashore in the dead of the night Lot of things can get in the way when you're trying to do what's right You don't understand it- my feelings for you You'd be honest with me if only you knew"- Honest With Me
| I saw the movie "A Beautiful Mind" last weekend, starring Russel Crowe and directed by Ron Howard- thought it was "A Beautiful Movie" :) It is the true story of John Nash, a brilliant mathemetician who won the Nobel Prize, and his amazing struggle with paranoid schizophrenia- a must see for anyone who works with the mentally ill or in human services, as well as the rest of the world... | In my work I mostly see elderly people, many of whom have dementia- I am fond of those clients- the essence of the person is sometimes the only thing that is left, other times the essence is among the first things to go. Some of my clients are memorable because they saw good things in me and made me feel good. One such client was in her 90s, sat with her doll she dealt with as if it were her baby and she would call out in a billy goat, braying voice. When I talked with her I held her hand and got down to her facial level- she listened to me speak, not really knowing what I was saying. Then she said, braying, yoouuu arrre niiiccce. Another lady was also in her 90s, lying in bed during nap time, thrashing her legs about in the bed mostly. She vascilated between english and her native Italian tongue, and she also listened and looked, not comprehending the words but seeming to understand something, and then said "she is wise" several times. It is interesting work at times. |
